The Annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting lands on Kings Highway on Saturday, November 28 this year, and the day has a lot of local effort behind it. The Greater Swedesboro Business Association holds a golf tournament each spring at a course in Woodstown, and the money raised there helps fund the parade.
Knowing how the association works gives some context to the rest of the season, from the coupon booklet handed out at the parade to the ornaments that mark participating shops during the Shop and Sip Stroll.
The Parade Started As A Golf Outing
Every spring, the GSBA holds its Annual Golf Tournament at Town & Country Links in Woodstown. Golfers pay to play, sponsors buy hole signs, there's a 50/50 raffle and a banquet at the end of the day. It reads like any other charity outing until you get to what the money actually funds: the Swedesboro-Woolwich Christmas Parade held the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Proceeds from the tournament help fund the Swedesboro-Woolwich Christmas Parade, which is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Local businesses play a direct part in putting it on each year.
That makes the parade a community effort with local businesses behind it, and a good reason to stop into a shop or two along the route.
One Saturday, Four Stops
The parade day itself has a sequence, and if you only catch the part on Kings Highway, you miss most of it.
- The parade starts at Walter Hill School on Kings Highway and moves through downtown before ending at Church Street.
- Immediately after, Santa and Mrs. Claus head to the Woolwich Fire House, a separate building from the parade route, where they meet with children.
- Hours later, the day closes with a tree lighting ceremony and caroling at Borough Hall.
Three locations, one event name, spread across an afternoon and into the evening. If you've only ever caught the parade itself and headed home, you've seen roughly a third of what the day is built around.
The Who-Pons Booklet
At the parade, Who-Pons are handed out. These coupon booklets are filled with deals from local businesses and fit right in with shop local Saturday.
For anyone already planning holiday errands, the booklet is an easy way to try a few of the businesses along Kings Highway.
The Second Event Nobody Should Confuse With The First
Separately from the parade, Swedesboro runs a Holiday Shop and Sip Stroll along Kings Highway, from Railroad Avenue to Ashton Avenue. It has its own footprint and its own purpose. Participating businesses mark their storefronts with holiday ornaments, and those ornaments signal special offers, pop-up vendors, and refreshments inside. There's live music, character experiences, and photo ops built into the stroll, but the throughline is retail. This is the season's shopping event, distinct from the parade's civic one.
If your plan is to walk Kings Highway once this season and call it done, you're picking between two different experiences. The parade day is about the procession and the tree lighting. The Shop and Sip Stroll is about which storefronts are worth walking into, and the ornaments in the windows are your map for that.
A Third Location Entirely
If you want a scene that has nothing to do with Kings Highway at all, Bridgeport Speedway on Flood Gate Road becomes something else once the racing season winds down. The track's grounds host a drive-through holiday light display each winter, typically opening somewhere between mid-November and early December and running on select nights through the end of the year, with dates that shift slightly year to year. It's worth checking the venue's own listing before you plan a night around it, since the exact window changes.
It's a strange kind of continuity. The same grounds that host sprint cars and modifieds most of the year turn into a mile-long drive-through of light displays once the weather turns.
Putting The Season On The Calendar
The parade is supported by the Greater Swedesboro Business Association, the Shop and Sip Stroll runs along its own stretch of Kings Highway, and the light show sits on the grounds at Flood Gate Road. Each has its own address and its own schedule, which makes them easy to fit into separate outings.
Start with November 28 and the route from Walter Hill School to Church Street, then add the Shop and Sip Stroll and the light show as time allows.
If you're new to town this year, the parade schedule and the Shop and Sip Stroll details are both listed on Historic Swedesboro's events page, which updates as dates firm up. Worth a bookmark before Thanksgiving weekend gets here.
I write about Swedesboro because I live and work in it, not because it's a market I cover from a distance. If you've got a question about how this town runs, whether it's about a Saturday parade route or something further down the road, Shayden Feret is a good person to ask. Let's Connect.
